Nia & Buti MVMNT

MY NIA JOURNEY

I discovered the Nia Technique in 2001 when I joined my mother for a wellness conference in Wisconsin and registered me for a workshop with three incredible Nia teachers; I was immediately hooked.

Nia is a blend of nine movement forms including Thai Chi, jazz dance, Thai Kwon Do, and hatha yoga. I took dance classes for years as a kid and was into club dancing at the time so Nia made perfect sense to me. For a week, I attended every Nia class as well as each talk by these incredible women. Nia movements ignited my entire body and my soul, while its philosophy resonated deeply in my heart.

I left that conference with a single DVD to stay connected to the work, knowing that I would pursue the White Belt training as soon as possible. Nia teachers learn through a belt system of week-long intensives: white, blue, brown, and black. The belts are held all over the world by about 20 different trainers.

I started my teaching career in 2003 and have taught classes across Cape Cod. My longest stints have been teaching Nia on the Beach each summer since about 2007, and year-round at the YMCA in West Barnstable since 2012.

I use the work of Nia throughout my day which includes learning how to joyfully dance through life. I use most of Nia’s mainstream routines in my classes and add in current pop music and even show tunes to the mix. I am constantly finding new tracks and practicing new moves; embodying music and creating choreography is my art in the world.

I feel incredibly grateful to have discovered Nia at such a young age, and be able to teach others of all ages to appreciate and fully inhabit their own bodies. I cherish the opportunity to ignite passion in each of my students, setting them free to love themselves and others completely.
